It isn’t just publishers

Writers often roll their eyes at the decisions of their publishers that just don’t seem to make any sense. But I’ve found an instance at that intersection of movies and music that makes it clear those publishers aren’t alone.

If you’ve heard the trailer to the movie Like Crazy, you may have been as captivated by Ingrid Michaelson’s gorgeous interpretation of the old Elvis Presley song, “Can’t Help Falling in Love with You.”  I immediately began searching around for it and after I figured out who the artist was, I bought it on iTunes.

But get this. It isn’t on the Like Crazy soundtrack!  How can you leave a song that drp-dead gorgeous — a song featured on the trailer — and leave it out of the soundtrack?

New banner image

How do you like the new banner?  The image is based on original artwork by Glenn Chadbourne, depicting me as Jack Torrance in Stephen King’s The Shining

It isn’t perfect. I’m hoping the WordPress theme I use can be customized to allow for the artwork in its original form, as opposed to the stretched version I’m using to make it all fit.

But I like it.  Certainly a lot more than that boring old pen I had up there.

Here’s the artwork in its original form.  (Thanks to my wonderful daughter for her help with the formatting.)

Don’t you love it?

Steve Jobs speaks to writers

In 2005, Steve Jobs gave a commencement address that I think speaks volumes to writers. Here is a link.

“Tiffany” holds strong on Kindle bestseller list

“Tiffany Gets Her Boobs” remains on the Kindle Humor bestseller list (in the free download category), coming in at number 33.  I’m really pleased at the success of this fun, goofy story.

Website statistics

I just looked at my website’s statistics for September. The number one search item that brought people to my site was one word in the title of my short story “Tiffany Gets Her Boobs.”

Guess which one.

I don’t think I got many bookmarks from that crowd.

“Tiffany” a Kindle Humor bestseller!

“Tiffany Gets Her Boobs” now ranks 13th on the Kindle Free Download bestseller list in the Humor category!

(That’s after only about a week of its price being dropped to free.)

Written under the pen name David Bawdy, “Tiffany” is a fun, short story prequel to Bubba Goes for Broke and has been very well received (including mention in Kris Rusch’s Recommended Reading list).

If I want to stretch the truth, I can now refer to myself as “Bestselling author David Hendrickson.”

I kinda like the sound of that. And who better to stretch the truth than a fiction writer?  I am, after all, paid to lie. It’s a job requirement!

Cracking the Ice picks up another great endorsement

My novel Cracking the Ice picked up another great endorsement, this one arriving just in time to make the cover. Lillie Johnson Edwards, Ph.D., Professor of History and African-American Studies at Drew University, gives this rave review.

“Cracking the Ice brilliantly teaches about the insidious nature of racism and the heroism of young scholar-athlete, Jessie Stackhouse. The riveting plot and realistic characters powerfully expose the racial stereotypes, racism and violence that plagued African-American students recruited to elite prep schools in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Hendrickson shows the turmoil of these critical years through the eyes of his story’s heroes, villains and victims, marvelously and realistically portraying one of the most critical moments in school integration and civil rights.”

“Tiffany” now free on Kindle

“Tiffany Gets Her Boobs” is now free at Amazon, as it has been everywhere else for a while. Check out this fun story as well as the sample chapters from the novel she appears in, Bubba Goes for Broke.

“Tiffany” included in Kris Rusch’s Recommended Reading!

If you’ve been reading this blog for any time at all, you know about my intense admiration for Kristine Kathryn Rusch. I consider her the single best teacher I’ve ever had. The workshops run by her and Dean Wesley Smith have changed my life. She’s also one of my favorite writers. (And also a heckuva person, but that’s getting beyond the point.)

Imagine my euphoria when I read her June Recommended Reading list and found my short story “Tiffany Gets Her Boobs” included!  I wouldn’t be surprised if my cries of delight and amazement remained audible all the way from Massachusetts to Oregon.

I wrote “Tiffany” as part of a short story workshop with Kris and soon after, released it electronically under my pen name David Bawdy. Here’s what she had to say:

I thought, based on the title, that I would hate “Tiffany Gets Her Boobs.” But I had to read it: Dave wrote it for the short story workshop. The story’s an off-shoot of Bubba Goes For Broke, his novel, and that was the assignment: write a stand-alone story that works for people who haven’t read the other work.  Well, “Tiffany” works beautifully, and by the end of the story, I had fallen in love with this savvy, determined, and somewhat crazy woman.  Everyone who has read this story remembers it and likes it.  You will too.

Music to my ears!  You can read it for free here or on the NOOK or at Smashwords. Until Amazon lowers its price, it remains 99 cents for the Kindle.

Hope you like it! And if you do, check out Bubba Goes for Broke.

Cracking the Ice cover

Here’s the cover for Cracking the Ice.  I don’t know about you, but I love it!

I’ll post a higher resolution version as soon as I can overcome some uploading problems with my website provider. (Don’t get me started…)

Isn’t the cover great?
